Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where can I find information about Choice programs in Lake County?

A. You can find information about Choice programs in Lake County on our web site at www.lake.k12.fl.us/educationalchoice. If you don’t find what you need on the website, click the “Contact Us” tab and submit a question that will be emailed to our Educational Choice team. You can also visit individual school websites for additional information about what’s offered at those schools.

Q. Who is eligible to submit a Choice application?

A. All applicants must meet residency and age requirements. The parent/legal guardian must submit the application.

Q.  Can I submit my Educational Choice application on a mobile device?

A. Screen formatting issues may occur when applying on a mobile device.  Adjusting your display settings may allow the information to display correctly. For best results, use Google Chrome from a laptop or desktop computer.

Q.  How do I apply to attend a school outside of my attendance area?

A. Click here to apply to the school of your choice. You will receive confirmation when your application is received. The Educational Choice transfer registration process must be finalized by May 1.

Please note:

  • Only one application per student may be submitted.
  • The capacity list gives a range of available seats for each school. These numbers are not a guarantee of the number of available seats for the 2017-2018 Educational Choice lottery, as they are impacted by changing real estate market and/or rezoning changes and program/grade-level capacity.
  • For schools with open capacity, applicants may rank choices as first and second preferences. First and second choices do not have equal chances of being selected. Programs may have limited number of available seats, therefore, seats may not be available for second choice students assigned in the lottery.
  • Identification of a second choice does not decrease a student’s chance of being selected to the first choice.
  • Applicants may make only one choice with closed capacity schools.
  • If the applicant has any siblings currently attending the same first choice school to which the student is applying and will continue to attend the same Choice school the next year, this must be noted on the application.
  • Siblings currently applying to the same Choice school must also be noted on the application.
  • Priority* for a transfer is given to the following groups:
    • Dependent children of active duty military personnel whose move resulted from military orders
    • Children who have been relocated due to foster care placement in a different school zone;
    • Children who move due to a court-ordered change in custody due to separation, divorce or the serious illness or death of a custodial parent;
    • Siblings (To receive preferences, siblings must apply to the same Choice program or school that their sibling is currently attending and will be attending during the school year). Siblings are defined as brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, stepbrother or stepsister living in the same household; and
    • Students who reside in the district.

*Parents/legal guardians must indicate on the application if one of the preference categories is applicable. While the application may be submitted electronically, by mail or in person, supporting documentation cannot be submitted electronically. Supporting documents must be mailed or delivered in person to:

While applicants may select a first and second choice with open capacity schools, applicants may make only one choice with closed capacity schools.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. What is the application deadline?

A. Educational Choice Transfer Applications for the following school year will be accepted Feb. 1 to Feb. 28, 2017. Applications must be received no later than close of business on Feb. 28.

Q. Does a lottery determine which applications are approved?

A. If a school has more first choice applicants than available seats, applicants will be assigned through the lottery selection process according to the list below. The lottery will be conducted no later than the first week of March. A letter will be sent to the mailing address to notify parents of the outcome.

Priority* for a transfer to a school with capacity is given to the following groups:

Q. What happens after the lottery?

A. Parents/legal guardians of students will receive notification from the district letting them know whether the student was selected.

  • Once a student is selected for the first choice, that student is immediately removed from the second choice on the application.
  • If a student declines the first assignment, the student must attend the school in his or her attendance area.
  • Parents/guardians must complete the registration process at the approved school by May 1; otherwise, the Educational Choice Transfer is void.
  • If a student exits a Choice school program voluntarily or involuntarily, he/she must return to his/her zoned school.
  • If a student is not selected to attend a Choice program prior to the start of the 2017-18 school year, a new application may be submitted for the 2018-19 school year.

Q. My child has a zone waiver to attend a school outside of our neighborhood. Will he have to reapply in 2017-18?

A. Students enrolled in a Lake County school in 2016-17 with a zone waiver are grandfathered in for 2017-18 if they are in good standing academically and behaviorally. The student may complete the highest level at his current school. Afterward, he will be reassigned to his neighborhood school and can apply for an Educational Choice transfer.

What about students on McKay Scholarships and Opportunity Scholarships?

A. Any student currently using a zone waiver, including McKay Scholarship students, may continue to attend the out-of-zone school to the highest level at that school. Any student attending school under an Opportunity Scholarship waiver does NOT need an Educational Choice Transfer. These scholarships will remain under the current process in place.

Q. My child has a zone waiver to attend a school outside of our neighborhood. His sibling would like to attend the same school next year as well. Will she be allowed?

A. Yes. If the older sibling is grandfathered in, the younger sibling will be allowed to attend as well. We do not want to split families. But you must submit an application for the younger sibling and indicate the sibling relationship.

Q. If I choose a school other than the school in my attendance area, will the district provide transportation?

A. No. Parents/legal guardians are responsible for transporting their students to schools outside of their attendance area.

Q. My daughter was on the basketball team at the school in her attendance area in 2016-17. If her Educational Choice application for 2017-18 is approved, is she allowed to play at her new school?

A. Yes. Students who are not suspended from interscholastic or intrascholastic extracurricular activities and are not suspended or expelled from school, will not have their eligibility delayed or be otherwise prevented from participating in such activities.

 Q. I choose to homeschool my student. May I apply for an Educational Choice waiver so he can play football at a school outside of our neighborhood?

A. Yes. A student who is homeschooled or is enrolled full time in virtual school may participate in any interscholastic extracurricular activity at the public school to which the student would be assigned according to the district school board attendance area policies. If the student chooses to attend a different school, the parent/legal guardian must complete the Educational Choice application process during the prior school year.

Q. If my application is denied, am I allowed to appeal the decision?

A. While the school district makes every effort to accommodate all educational choice requests, many of the district schools are at or above capacity, which means they cannot accommodate students who live outside the attendance area to which those schools are assigned.

Parents/legal guardians who believe their child was not allowed an equitable opportunity to be considered for a Choice program during the eligibility process as a result of a technical problem or who want to claim hardship may request an appeal by end of business on the fifth school day after notification of lottery results. The basis of the appeal, along with additional supporting documentation, must be provided at the time of the request. The appeal must provide additional information to be considered in making the decision. Appeal requests may be sent to:
